All right, Red Zone Blitz listeners. We're back with another episode. I'm very, very, very happy that we're joined by Taryn Kovach from Roundtable Sports. I had the pleasure of talking to Taryn on Reddit because I was looking up things for the Husky spring game, and there's only one person posting on the Reddit about the Huskies. And I was like, this guy seems to know what he's talking about. And then we ended up talking. We ended up, you know, um following each other on social media. I saw some of the work Taryn has been doing, and now we have him on as a guest. It's huge. Taryn, welcome to the show. How are you doing?
SPEAKER_01Doing great. Thanks for having me.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, the Reddit's uh unlikely place, but yeah, no, it was uh it was a big slide in the DMs for me. I had to slide in those D slide in those DMs because I'm like, hey man, this guy, there's not a whole lot of Husky's football talk going on, and this is the one guy that seems passionate, and turns out you know he was our guy. So um, first of all, welcome Taryn. Second of all, man, year three under Fitch, six and seven the first year, nine and four the second year. Where do you see the trajectory heading into year three of the pro program?
SPEAKER_01I think they'll be better than they were last year for sure. I I think it it's so weird now trying to recontextualize of what's a successful season in a 12-team college playoff. Uh my blanket thought just looking at the roster and the the the rest of the conference is this is a thousand percent a playoff caliber roster. Now, whether that's Big Ten champion make it or you know, second, third, potentially even fourth seed in the Big Ten and make it, you know, that's a different question. But I think that this is definitely a 10-win team. Uh, I think they could definitely make some noise. I think there's a lot of close games, competitive games that they ended up beating on the wrong side of last year that uh they could flip this year. Um, I think that uh in the trenches they'll they'll be great. I think that's it's gonna start in and out with them. Uh but looking at this roster, I think it's very talented. I think that the returners they do have are uh going to take steps forward. I think that a lot of the newcomers they have are going to be major impacts, and uh unless they get hit with injuries kind of like what they were last year, I think that there's not really any reason why this team shouldn't uh improve by at least one win this season.
SPEAKER_00No, for sure. And and you talk about uh you talk about returners. Um I guess we'll start with the biggest returner of them all, Damon Williams Jr. coming back as quarterback. Now, you're obviously close with the Huskies, you do a lot of reporting, and I'm sure when this landed um on social media and on your news desk and you ended up digging into it, you were like, excuse me, what is happening here? Um what actually happened from your perspective? Do you think this was a leverage play? What do you think he had desires to leave? Was it something else entirely? Like, was he just following Lane Kiffin in the into the sorority houses at LSU? Like, well, what was what was the reason here for the whole saga?
SPEAKER_01I think, well, people forget the starting point of this wasn't when he announced he would enter the portal, it was the fact that he signed the contract to return to the Huskies first. So if you look at it from that angle, he had every intention of returning to UW next year, and something happened and someone got in his ear. He and Jed have been intentionally vague about this in the offseason over like the exact sequence of events that led to him making that decision, they've chalked it up to bad advice. And even though that's not satisfactory for a lot of people, yeah, I think that's exactly what it was. I think that uh whether it was Lane Kiffin, a booster, someone reached out to an agent, a representative, or to him or his family specifically, and was like, hey, X amount of dollars if you come over here, after he signed the contract, because obviously if he got that whatever it was message beforehand, he wouldn't have signed that deal. And then I think after a while, I I do believe that he and Jed had like an honest conversation, like uh Jed talked about, and they did come to the conclusion, even with the legal stuff happening or potentially had the having the potential to happen, that it was in his best interest to return to Washington because even if he has a bad year, he's still a talented quarterback, like a D1 transfer option would be available to him regardless after this year. If he has a great season, the NFL's right there. So regardless, he he is not hurt in any way by coming back to Washington, and I think that that was the general just based on my own observation playing two and two together, I think that would have been a general takeaway from whatever conversations he had with Jed, and also doesn't have to deal with the legal stuff. But I I do believe, even though again it's not satisfactory, that it was chalked up to someone offered him more money, he got bad advice, uh, whether it was LS here or not, like they're never gonna confirm whether it was or not, but I think it's fair to assume at this point uh he just saw the option opportunity to play in the SEC in a very high-powered offense with a very offensive-focused coach, and you know, it just was bad timing.
SPEAKER_00Listen, I don't blame him. Like, I don't I don't blame him in the sense of like if he had not signed to return back to Washington and he had gone in and and you know, he wanted to go to LSU and he wanted to wear, you know, wear the collars, do his thing, ball out with Lancief and be the air apparent. I don't blame him. My thing is more so like you signed the contract, like you and he's uh he's honoring it now. Like he was out spring game. I mean he threw the pick as in the opening drive and all that stuff, and he looked a little it looked a little shaky. Um but my I guess my thing is how is um how do you think this changes his uh dynamic with the players? Like how do you think that changes a quarterback's gotta be dialed in with everybody on the offense, not just the receivers or the running back, but it's also his offensive line. How how do you think that changes those relationships that he has with his offensive lineman or with his center or with his uh you know his number one receiver? Do they look at him any differently, you think, now that he's back, but he wanted to leave at one point?
SPEAKER_01I don't think so. There's always there's conversations that he a thousand percent had with the players that we're not privy to and we're not gonna be privy to unless one of them wants to bring it up. But um everything I saw during screen training was uh what you would expect an offense to react to their quarterback and a quarterback to relax to real relate to their offense. He was talking with guys on the sidelines, he was celebrating with guys during plays, he was being a leader, leading the huddle. Uh coaches talked about him taking that step as a leader, the players talked about him taking that step. It seemed like just based on how they were interacting with each other during practices, that it wasn't just lip service, that it was a legitimate thing that they noticed he was doing. Um, I don't know how much of that comes from just his natural progression and how much of it does come from the fact that you know he has something to prove that he is committed to this program after everything that happened, maybe a combination of the both. But um he, from what I've seen, the his decision in January did not have much of any impact over how the players were reacting to what he was saying or how he was interacting with the players or anything like that.
SPEAKER_00No, and and I think your your biggest point there is we're never gonna really know unless somebody comes out and says something about what that conversation looked like. Now, he led the Big Ten in total offense as a sophomore. Um, what do you think a Heisman caliber season looks like for him? I mean, we talked about it. Like you talked about him going potentially to the draft, him potentially going to another D1 transfer. Now, what would be Heisman for uh for Mr. Williams?
SPEAKER_01Just having the kind of games he had for the majority of the year, except in like the big moments. And that was something that even he and Jed mentioned was you look at his stats, like you look at that and you're like, oh, that's an NFL draft pick. Like just from the surface level, you look at that and you're like, oh, that's one of the best quarterbacks in the nation. And when you go into a game by game, you notice, okay, Ohio State, Michigan, uh, the Wisconsin game, those are the games where he was not at his best. Those were the games where the the max level he's at, the level that we've seen, the level that made Ched want him to come over with him from Arizona, uh that he wasn't there. And a Heisman year for him, he's already had that level now of be being a consistent and elite, or not elite, but a consistent and high-end starter over the course of an entire year. Now the next step for him and what a Heisman season would be is to show up at that level in those games and be able to follow through. Now, from a stat perspective, that's probably like 3,800 to 4,000 yards. Like I don't expect him to put up Michael Penick's numbers, but um, you know, just probably a slight uptick in the numbers he had last year and just perform in those games.
SPEAKER_00No, that that's huge. And and you're speaking about numbers, um, segueing a little bit here to the the offense as a whole. Um, Denzel Boston put up some crazy numbers um during his time, 11 touchdowns, 881 yards, top 40 pick. Um, how do you think they replace his production?
SPEAKER_01Well, in terms of the number one target, it's definitely gonna be Desmond Roebuck. Uh, I mean that that's like one common thing from Spring is that Roebuck and Williams have that connection where it's you know, if a play is developing, Roebuck just finds a way to get open. Very, for any NFL fans, very Tyler Lockett-esque of like it might there might be three defenders around him, but there is that small pocket where he's just in and Williams can find him. But he's moving from the outside to the slot, so that's where kind of the replacements are on the outside. Um, it seemed uh and and that's hard to gauge right now. Uh, even Jed said they don't really know because so many wide receivers were out for most of the spring. Uh Chris Lawson, uh Bod Penn Miller, the transfer from Ohio State, uh, Christian Moss, transfer from Kennestal State, uh Jordan Clay, who was in the spring game but did miss some time. Uh all of those guys were in and out at various points. Uh so it's they didn't really get a full look over. I I don't even think they had a full week of a consistent one, two, and three uh in terms of outside guys and roebuck in the slot. But it seems like Rashid is the front run runner for at least one of those uh outsiders, and he he really put together a great spring. Like if you were to put together a ladder of top performers, he would be top two, top three, arguably top one. I mean, he uh I'm fully bought into Dylan Robinson and Emmanuel Carnley being one of the best cornerback duos in the Big Ten this year, and Williams gave them a run for their money. He he tested them and challenged them. And you mentioned the spring game, how you know Williams looked shaky shaky after that pick, which was thrown to Williams, thrown outside and behind him. Williams has the uh Williams, both Williams have the longest play of the spring. Yeah, that 47-yard touchdown pass. It could be Bod Penn Miller, it could be it could be uh Chris Lawson, it could be Christian Moss. We just don't know at this point. And that's gonna be probably the the most key position that's figured out during uh during training camp in the summer.
SPEAKER_00No, 100%. Now, wide receiver-wise, um, like you said, it's it's a bit of a wide open field. Um, running back rooms, uh, Jonah Coleman and Adam Mohammed both um are not on the team anymore. What does that backfield look like uh for this upcoming year?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so Jordan Washington did enter the spring as like the presumptive number one, but already uh running back was probably I did say the outside receiver would be the key position. Running back is actually probably their 1A and 1B. Uh Jordan Washington entered as number one. The veteran transfers that uh they got uh Jaden Lamar from Oregon and Trey Cooley from Troy, both of them are out recovering from respective surgeries. They'll be back in training camp. But Washington uh did suffer the neck injury, and uh Jed Fish said that they'll determine his status in July, so he could be out for an extended period of time. So they just never had the full picture of the running by running back room during spring. Quaid Carr stepped up in a in a big way for the for the guys who are out, and he's definitely a candidate to get uh to get uh reps. He's speed speed is his big thing. He he is explosive, he gets he gets a lane, he's gonna take it and run with it. Um and he also has like for someone of his size, he has more pop than what you would expect. Like, as soon as they allowed full contact in scrimmages or springs, like it felt like he was headhunting a DB almost, like he had a point to prove. Um But it's I I think that the three most likely candidates, if Washington is out, uh to get starting reps are Lamar, it is Cooley, it is uh it is Carr. Umto Sanu is uh despite being a true freshman, is is big. He probably has the most pure size of the running backs that were available in spring. I could see him getting some short guardage or goal line reps. Um if Washington is healthy, it would likely be him, uh, Cooley, Lamar, and I would expect Carr to be a big impact player on uh special teams. But um that's another one that's kind of like it's just up in the air right now because so many players were out during the spring, and training camp will definitely be uh clarify that picture a lot.
SPEAKER_00No, 100%, 100%. Now, shifting a little to defense, uh Ryan, Ryan Walters' defense was uh top 15 in scoring um as a scoring defense last year. Um, number one, I think, uh do you think uh they can sustain that obviously with so much interior defensive line turnover? Um, but number two, what do you think the identity of this of this defense is if you had to give it one?
SPEAKER_01Uh God, that's a great question. I would say there's gonna be a lot more playmaking on defense this year. I think uh if you're looking at the one thing that maybe the defense could have done better, it was just uh turnovers. Now you look at the turnover ratio and it's really, really good, so you're like, what are you talking about? But that's just because the offense did not turn the ball over that much. Um it was kind of a combination that led to that stat. Uh, and they put a real emphasis on playmaking this year. Uh even days when it was non-contact, it was like still the linebackers would give that extra punch to the ball, sometimes like get that fumble. It like just that kind of mentality. And they're they believe they could be the best the best defense in the country, and that's something they've all bought into. That's something that Walters generally genuinely believes. And I think the key thing for this defense will be depth, uh, especially on the defensive line. The the turnover is uh a big deal, but you look at the defensive line and between Derek Coleman Brusa coming in as a true freshman and putting up great reps, uh, Alinius Davis, another one of the the best players from spring, Emmanuel Carnelly coming in and being living up to the billing billing, like he's going to be a dog. Um there they're just there's a couple guys where you look at and you're like, okay, those are the stars, but you look at the other units, there's there's no one who stands out as like a key weakness. And I think that that's going to help the Huskies have that depth. The linebacker room, they're like four or five deep at that point, despite having two linebackers on the starting defense. So it'll be a situation where there might not be a lot of great got like first-round talent type of guys, but there are but they do have depth, they are gonna rotate in, and everyone's gonna come in with that a very similar mentality, and I think having that uniform blink of the approach, and as again, as long as they stay healthy, uh that's gonna help them just maximize the potential of a lot of the guys they have and the depth they have.
SPEAKER_00No, a hundred percent, a hundred percent. And um, I I want to be very cognizant before people start yelling at me that it is a spring game. It is a spring game, but they're they're they're hunting for the ball. They're ball hawking, like they're they're pouncing on, they're they're jumping for the that ball, and like to your point, you're gonna see some interceptions this year. We're gonna maybe see some pick sixes. Um speaking of this upcoming year, um looking at their schedule. Um now, opening days, the Apple Cup. Washington State, first up, how loaded is that game emotionally um for the Huskies fan base, you think?
SPEAKER_01Uh it's big. Like, obviously, um uh a lot uh obviously um uh you look at just the realignment and things of that ilk, and uh it's not it doesn't mean the same as it used to. It's not a Pac-12 game, it doesn't count to the conference, but it's it's for bragging rights. Like, there's probably more of a chip on WSU's shoulder just because of everything that went down than uh than uh than there is for Washington, but it's it it is bragging rights, and in the modern era era of college football where there's not a whole lot of traditional rivalry games that have as major impact as they used to do, it's big. And it's it's one of those games where based on whether or not they get into the playoffs or not, if they win this game, it probably doesn't mean a lot for them, but if they lose this game, it means a lot. So there's definitely an emphasis of like, hey, yeah, this this isn't the toughest team we're probably gonna face this year. This still is not a game we can just overlook and look past them.
SPEAKER_00100%.
SPEAKER_01We saw that two years ago in Jed Fish's first year. Like, I feel like they kind of took them for granted a little bit, didn't play their hardest, and then WSU came out with that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, no, a hundred percent. Now, you mentioned it's not probably one of the toughest opponents. Uh, Penn State's coming in in November. Um, my circle that one for us. How big of a game do you think that is for the for the program?
SPEAKER_01I think that's a big one because I think Penn State, maybe in a spot behind Washington in terms of tiers, just because of how last year went, but like I think they're both looking at this year in very similar ways in terms of like we've kind of been on right in the cusp or right in the thick of it in terms of being in the mix of the top teams in the league, but we just haven't been able to make I mean, obviously, Washington was like the runners up last year, but like from a general sense, or not last year, a couple years ago, but in a general sense, um, just very similar put of like we're kind of just right on that edge and pushing it, and with it being a November game, again, like I mentioned before, because of the way the college football playoff is right now, you don't have to be a top two team in the Big Ten or the SEC to make the playoff. Yeah. So this could be essentially the game that decides the playoff fate for either team. And I think that that will be uh if one of them is underperforming going into this game, obviously the stakes are a little bit different, but uh I think that is going to be a big one, and also for Washington with it being at its home, uh you know, they hosted Ohio State last year, and you could sense like just the feel in the like with how Washington was performing going into it, the hype Ohio State had. Obviously, Washington wasn't able to pull that one, but there was like such a unique atmosphere of like the fans feeling like this is special, and if both teams go into that game in a similar place on the fringe of college football playoff, I think that that will have a similar feel.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, no, a hundred percent, a hundred percent. Um, the season closes, speaking of rivalries, uh the season closes at Oregon. Um, I I think this is probably um like when I look on the internet as like two fan bases that absolutely hate each other. This this is up there. I think they do not like each other. Um, do you think this like this rivalry obviously with Oregon? Is that the measuring stick for the where this program is?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I think so. Because I I think Oregon is the program that Washington wants to be, and I think that dates back to uh Pac-12 days. I I think you look at it, it's like Oregon, just because of the money they had, the reputation they had, the facilities they had. They've dominated recruiting in the Pacific Northwest for years. And the Huskies are now because of Jed Fish being able to recruit, and like his proof of concept of being able to turn programs around, are now starting to kind of like make that shift and that push uh into generally like winning a lot of these recruiting battles against Oregon. So now it's starting to feel like it's more level, and obviously Oregon still has the more general college football playoff success, but uh both have been to a national title title game and neither have won. Both know they're right there, both know they can do it, and uh because of just regionality and everything like that, and because they did go to the Big Ten together, that's one of the rivalries that does still quote unquote matter in college football. And I think if Washington does take that step forward, and you know, Oregon's kind of now in not quite hot seat mode, but it's like you you can only have a top five team so many times and not finish the job before things start to get to a boiling point. So now both teams are kind of like in a very different Place but with the same goal, and I think that that'll make for an interesting uh I'm kind of scared to look at social media during that week, but it'll make for for an interesting uh scenario for sure.
SPEAKER_00No, 100%, 100%. Now, speaking about like the program from a wider, wider lens, now this is the best recruiting class rated wise in program history. Um what players do you think from this class could make an immediate impact this year? If you could give me three.
SPEAKER_01Uh Cody Green, Derek Coleman, Brusa, Jordan Clay. Uh Cody Green is essentially locked uh locked into the team's left tackle position at this point. Um if Cole Dietrich, he missed Spring 2, the Sam Houston transfer, if he comes in and just balls out uh in training camp, then maybe that changes a little bit. But Cody Green came in, uh was at or near the top of all the athletic testing the the Huskies did before spring began. Uh because Carver Willis was obviously in the draft, because Dietrich was hurt, they felt like he was the best bet to start spring at left tackle, and he didn't do anything to give it up aside from Alinnius Davis, you know, winning a couple one-on-one battles, which like if if you're a 17-18-year-old going against Alinnius Davis, I feel like you get a little leeway there. Um but uh I th I but he's he's done, he's lived up to the billing. Jordan Clay, like I said, missed a couple practices due to a due to a wrist thing, but was in there in the spring, had the catch on the sideline, great catch on the sideline before the the DeMonta Rashid touchdown that we talked about earlier. Um has gotten a lot of outside reps when he has been healthy. Um obviously he's gonna it's just kind of gonna have to like he's gonna come out, have to come out on the right end of that four-person race for that last outside receiver spot. Um but uh he has the talent. Uh he was a big point of emphasis for the Huskies trying to flip him from Baylor, and it was there was a reason for that. And then Derek Coleman Brusa. Um as you mentioned before, they were they lost guys on the interior and kind of a similar deal to Green. They felt like Brussa with um with the way he was looking uh during athletic testing and his size already, they felt like he was give him the reps, and he he and the defensive line as a whole, like really when the ones went against each other, like the running game struggled to get going a little bit a couple times, and he was right in the thick of it. So I think that he's going to be another guy to watch. And if there was like an honorable mention, defin definitely uh Ramzak Furian, uh Edge Rusher would be another one to watch. He um ran mostly with the twos during spring, but like as it got towards the end of it and in the scrimmage, he started to get more uh reps with the runs, kind of with the ones, kind of as a rotational D end. And uh he made a couple standout plays himself, a couple like really noticeable tackles for loss where he just sprinted off the edge and got around his guy. And uh so I think Coleman Brusa, uh Green, and Clay would be the three main guys to watch with uh Ramzak Furrian definitely having an opportunity to make some noise as well.
SPEAKER_00No, that that's amazing. Now, the criticisms, the criticisms of this uh of this fan base, uh I'm gonna try not to set you up here to get uh clipped and get people yelling at your DMs. Now, the criticism that I've seen is people sometimes when you know they're not when Husky Stadium is not jam-packed with fans, it's usually as a result of the results are not that great. And you know, you need you know, you your weekend, you got the Seahawks doing their thing, winning Super Bowls, the Kraken are probably gonna be doing something. Um people tend to tune out a little bit for for the Huskies when the when you talk about your casual fan. Now, is the fan base as a whole buying in the way that the uh that fish needs them to after a slow year one?
SPEAKER_01I think they're starting to. I I I think that and you have to like remember with any fan base is like social media is just such a microcosm of like the loudest of like the minority, who whoever that may be. Um, and I think that if you look at social media, you think that this fan base wants fish fired already. And and but I I think most people in the fan base understood that after that uh championship runner-up season that there it was going to be a rebuild year. Um I I I don't think a lot of people wanted Fish to come in and have that one win season that he did his first year with Arizona. Thankfully he didn't. Um, but uh I think they're looking at the recruiting uh even past this year, what they're doing with the 2027 class, and they're they've offered like some genuine blue chippers for the 28 class. They're sweeting for the fences with that. And uh I think they're seeing what Fish is doing, they're seeing the talent come in. Uh I do think the fan base as a whole was frustrated with the Damon Williams situation, but I think it's one of those things where like if he does well and the team's winning games, it that they are they're not gonna be able to do. Winning solves everything.
SPEAKER_00Winning solves everything.
SPEAKER_01Exactly. Uh, and I I think the fan base is just because I think Seattle sports fans as as a whole are just like used to disappointment. So so it's like cautious optimism, I would describe it. Uh but I think that uh the team starts the year four and one, five and oh, that it's not gonna be a be a worry whether or not Husky Stadium's packed or not.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Now, I really appreciate your time. I know you're busy. I know you're covering all not just football, you're covering all sorts of sports. Um, but we're gonna let you go. But before we do, I like to do this with my guests. It's my little rapid fire round. So as as the name says, I'm gonna shoot out a question. You rapid fire an answer. Um, some of it will be um football related, some of it might not be. Um favorite place to go out before a Huskies game if you are going out.
SPEAKER_01Ooh, I haven't looked at a lot of bars, but I know that um there's I'm forgetting the name of it, but there's a place in Pioneer Square, it's like a firefighters bar, and it's it's a really good place to go to.
SPEAKER_00Okay. That gives us enough. That gives that gives us enough search prompts to find it. Um favorite fast food place?
SPEAKER_01Uh there's a place in Soto in Seattle called uh uh Quick Pick Drive-in. I like that place.
SPEAKER_00What's your order?
SPEAKER_01Uh triple cheeseburger, because it's a drive-in. It's one of those small like patties. Uh fries, Oreo milkshake.
SPEAKER_00Okay. Um guess the record for the Huskies this upcoming year.
SPEAKER_01Ooh. Um that's hard. I I think regular season, 10 wins. I'm I'm comfortable with 10 wins.
SPEAKER_00Okay. Um, favorite husky moment so far in your life.
SPEAKER_01Ooh. Uh so weird because I I've been in the Palouse for most of my life, so I'm I'm like always been a husky adjacent. Uh I think that one moment that I did, I I don't know why. I loved Bishop Sankey as a player.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So just his whole career at UW, I I loved.
SPEAKER_00Amazing. Amazing. One thing that people um don't know about Washington, the state, the school, um, that they should know.
SPEAKER_01Uh I I would I would be bold to say best hiking trails in the country.
SPEAKER_00Damn. Okay. Pacific Northwest. I mean, I'm on the other side of the border. I can attest, guys. I can attest. The Pacific Northwest. We got a lockdown for hiking. Um, Tared, I appreciate you so much, man, for coming on um and and talking with us about the Washington Huskies football program. Where can people find you and where can they follow you to read more about your work?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, they uh for social media, uh, Twitter, Blue Sky, Facebook is mostly my business at this point. Uh uh just my name, uh, Twitter on Blue Sky at Taran underscore Kovach uh for stories. You can find uh the husky coverage if you're a baseball fan like the Mariners 2, uh Roundtable Sports RTB.io. Take you to the homepage, can follow the teams there, any other teams you're a fan of. And uh yeah, I'll be I'll be there at training camp uh covering the team right in the thick of it. Men's and women's basketball too. Uh and yeah.
SPEAKER_00Amazing, man. I appreciate it. I appreciate you so much taking the time. And you know what? This is not gonna be the final time Taryn's gonna be on the program. I think we're gonna get him on. We're gonna follow up with them. If they somehow lose that Apple Cup game, I'm calling Terry and right away. Being like, Taryn, we need an emergency podcast.
